Around 1,200 Jews were ordered to stand in groups of 4 and were led to the "trenches" dug in the woods behind Włodzimierz. Ironically, a military band was accompanying them playing marches. [...] German soldiers ordered them to strip naked and in groups of ten lie in the pit, face down. Once they did that, young Gestapo men dressed in sportswear and with a smile on their faces, began shooting each person in the back of their heads. Other groups of Jews were ordered to stand on the heads of the previously executed people and lie down facing feet of their dead compatriots. Layers of bodies were placed with heads alternately upright and inverted. |
