On Shevat 14th [1941] in Grabnik , on a sqaure by Lisa-Kuli Street 17,500 people gathered. Once they had been robbed of everything, battalions of armed "hero" SS-men came and started to separate out the children, the young and the elderly, saying that both children and the elderly would be transported in cars. After the separation, the SS-men started rushing the older people. There was a forest near that square. Pits had been dug in that forest, each a few kilometres apart from another. Machine guns had been hidden near those pits. The children were rushed separately. They were thrown into the pits, showered with grenades and immediately covered with dirt. The older people were being pushed and threatened with automatic weapons, "Jude lauf" - "Run, Jew". Those who did not run fast were shot. Some ran a kilometre or two, others, who heard the shots, stopped and said they did not care and these were shot. In the evening, the German heroes began the shooting. They lit up the entire area with floodlights and shot into the defenceless crowd. The shooting lasted all night and until noon of the next day. |
