In July 1943 Jews from the ghetto in Bochnia were called on to voluntarily report for work in Košice. Crowds of volunteers, men and women, gathered. 20 trucks arrived and the Jewish people got on them thinking they were going to work. They drove 7km to Gromada Paczków. They realized they were victims of a deceit when they entered the woods. There was a mass grave dug earlier by the members of Baudienst (labour battalion) and the police, waiting for the victims. While still in the trucks, they were ordered to strip naked and then they would individually come closer to the grave. After being shot they would fall straight into the grave or they would be pushed in with a kick. According to the testimonies of local people, around 700-800 people were victims of the Germans' trap. |
